Residential Care for Children with Learning Disabilities | Elevated Living Group
Ofsted-registered specialist residential care for children and young people aged 7-17 with learning disabilities - accepting referrals from placing authorities throughout England, tailored to every child, and focused on independence, confidence, and a brighter future.

Specialist Care Built Around Each Child's Learning Needs
Learning difficulties affect children in many different ways. Some children struggle with reading, writing, or numeracy; others find it harder to process information, communicate their needs, or understand abstract concepts. Many children in residential care who have experienced trauma or adverse childhood experiences also present with learning disabilities that have never been formally assessed or adequately supported.
At Elevated Living Group, we recognise learning disabilities not as limitations, but as differences that require a tailored approach. Our residential homes are staffed by professionals experienced in supporting children with a wide range of learning disabilities - including those that co-exist with emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD), ADHD, autism, attachment disorders, and complex trauma.
Every child who joins our homes undergoes a thorough holistic assessment, helping us to understand their unique profile of strengths and challenges - and to build a care and support plan that genuinely reflects who they are.
Ofsted-Registered Provider
Our residential homes across the North West are fully Ofsted-registered under the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015. Placing authorities can have complete confidence in the quality, safety, and governance of our provision for children with learning disabilities.
Types of Learning Disabilities We Support
Our experienced specialist team supports children and young people with a broad range of learning disabilities, whether diagnosed or undiagnosed.
Dyslexia & Literacy Difficulties
Children with dyslexia often arrive with low self-esteem from years of academic struggle. We provide patient, multi-sensory literacy support in collaboration with specialist teachers and SENCOs.
Moderate Learning Disabilities (MLD)
Children with MLD may need more time and adapted resources to process information. Our team uses clear, consistent communication and breaks tasks into manageable steps.
Language & Communication Difficulties
We support children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN) using Makaton signing across our homes. Where needed, we work alongside speech and language therapists.
ADHD & Processing Difficulties
ADHD and processing difficulties affect learning, focus, and organisation. Our structured routines and trained staff help children develop practical strategies for managing their day.
Autism Spectrum & Sensory Needs
Autistic children often have distinct learning profiles requiring specialist understanding. Our team is trained in autism awareness and creates sensory-aware, predictable home environments.
Co-occurring EBD & Learning Disabilities
Many children present with both EBD and learning disabilities - a combination our team understands well. Our integrated approach addresses both needs at once. Learn more about our EBD provision.
Working with Schools to Support Children's Learning
Residential care and education are most powerful when they work together. We actively collaborate with every child's school to ensure their learning needs are met consistently.
School Liaison & Attendance
We work closely with specialist schools and resourced provisions to ensure children are consistently attending, supported, and making progress. Our staff communicate regularly with school SENCOs, class teachers, and educational psychologists to share information and align strategies between home and school.
Where children have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), we actively participate in annual reviews, contribute reports, and advocate for the child's needs. Where a child is without a suitable school place, we work with the placing authority and local SEND team to resolve this as a priority.
In-Home Learning Support
Many children with learning disabilities benefit from additional support outside of formal schooling. Our team are trained to provide structured homework support, literacy and numeracy practice, and confidence-building activities tailored to each child's learning profile.
We also provide access to online learning tools, sensory resources, and creative educational activities - recognising that children with learning disabilities often thrive through practical, hands-on approaches rather than traditional classroom methods.
Makaton Communication
Elevated Living Group is proud to be a Makaton-using organisation. Makaton is a unique language programme using symbols, signs, and speech to enable people with communication difficulties to communicate effectively. Our team use Makaton daily with children who benefit from this approach - ensuring no child in our care is left without a means of expressing their needs, wishes, and feelings.
Life Skills & Independence Development
Children with learning disabilities often need more time and support to develop the skills needed for independent adult life. We build these skills intentionally, at each child's own pace.
Daily Living Skills
Cooking, cleaning, managing money, using public transport, and maintaining personal hygiene - our staff teach and reinforce these skills through daily routines, giving children the foundations for greater independence.
Social Skills & Relationships
Many children with learning disabilities find social situations challenging. We actively create opportunities to practise social skills in safe environments - from mealtimes and group activities in our residential homes to community outings and clubs.
Emotional Regulation
Learning difficulties can cause frustration, anxiety, and low confidence. We support emotional regulation through consistent, calm responses, visual tools, and age-appropriate strategies that help children understand and manage their feelings.
Confidence & Aspirations
We celebrate every achievement, however small, and actively help children discover their talents and interests. Whether it's art, sport, music, or cooking - we build confidence through success and help children develop positive aspirations for their future.
